This course serves as an introduction to theories of child intervention practice. Particular emphasis is given to understanding the role of child protection in society and its place in protecting children while enhancing family functioning. The ecological model is central to understanding how to protect a child within their own culture and support systems across agencies and systems that support families and children in a variety of serving professions. Attention is given to the impact of colonization and the need for strengths-based and anti-oppressive approaches across vulnerable populations. Students will develop an understanding of the complex change process that focuses upon permanency for the child and the sustaining of meaningful relationships to encourage successful development into adulthood.
