ENGL 3344 - Nineteenth-Century Realism and Reform Credit(s): 3 Lecture Hour(s): 3 Lecture Hours Schedule Type: Lecture, Blended, Online This course treats nineteenth-century realism as a mode of environmental and social criticism. In so doing, it focuses on realist narratives in several genres (fiction, poetry, non-fiction) in order to explore the impact of industrialization and urbanization on literary consciousness in the 1800s. Writers studied include, among others, Carlyle, Tennyson, Mill, Dickens, Barrett Browning, Eliot, and Hardy.
