This course is an introduction to the history of South Asia, comprised of the contemporary states of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka amongst others. We begin with the ancient world and survey the rise of medieval and early modern states, the colonial period, nationalist movements, and the end of British imperial rule in the mid-twentieth century. In the context of histories of state formation and trans-regional trade, the topics examined may include questions of cultural, social, and religious change.
