This course considers the history of state relations with Indigenous people in Canada, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. Topics include the development of “Indian policy” in Canada and sociocultural and legal aspects of current issues such as land claims, treaties, the status of women, human rights, the environment, data sovereignty, and expression of Indigenous identity.
