Introduces the principles of ecosystem ecology by examining energy flow through terrestrial ecosystems, species interdependences at trophic levels, and ecological processes that sustain ecosystem functions. Learners examine ecosystem response to spatial and temporal variability, as well as to natural and human-induced disturbances. Laboratory activities involve sampling environmental matrices, conducting analyses, and interpreting ecological data, which is presented in a scientific report. Through summative assessment, learners apply their understanding to the evaluation of ecosystem resilience and implementation of strategies to mitigate the impacts of disturbance on ecosystem function.
