Data Science, B.Sc.

The BSc Data Science provides students with thorough training in Data Science, focusing on making decisions supported by data. It includes core education in Mathematics and Statistics (to formulate relevant questions and determine the answer based on data) and Computer Science (to manipulate and visualize data efficiently) along with a concentration in a disciplinary cognate (to provide domain knowledge). The program provides a solid theoretical basis as well as practical experience and work-integrated learning opportunities. Data Science graduates have an impact on society by supporting evidence-based decisions based on humanity’s ever-growing collection of data.

Program Continuance

Students accepted into the B.Sc. in Data Science degree program must comply with all University policies and regulations relating to baccalaureate degrees and continuance. 

Work Term

Students must complete a mandatory Work Integrated Learning course.

General Admission Requirements

All students must meet the general admission requirements for Mount Royal University programs, as indicated in the Admission  section of this calendar.

Additional Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the general admission requirements indicated in the Admission  section of this calendar, applicants must also satisfy the following criteria.

Academic Course Requirements

The following specific courses (or equivalencies) with the specified minimum grades are required for admission into the Bachelor of Science - Data Science program:

  • English Language Arts 30-1 - 60%
  • Mathematics 30-1 - 65%

Although Conditional Admission may be granted in advance of receipt of final/official transcripts, confirmation of the achievement of specified minimum grades will take place after all final/official transcripts have been received by the University. Applicants who do not meet these minimum grade requirements will be denied admission.

Curriculum is pending GFC approval and is subject to change.

The B.Sc. in Data Science consists of 20 core courses, a choice of one 6-course concentration, 10 General Education courses, and 4 electives.

Core Courses


All of the following courses are required.

Concentration in Computer Science and Big Data


Take the following two courses:

Concentration in Mathematics and Statistics


Take the following course:

Electives


Complete four elective courses.

General Education Requirements


Ten courses must be completed to meet the General Education requirements to graduate with a B.Sc. in Data Science. 

  1. Four courses will be taken at the foundational level: one from each of the thematic clusters.
  2. Three courses will be taken at the second tier: no more than one from each of the three thematic clusters: Values, Beliefs and Identity, Community and Society, and Communication. 
  3. Three courses must be taken at the third tier, selected from at least two of the thematic clusters.
