ENGL 3344 - Victorian Realism and Reform

This course treats Victorian realism as a mode of environmental and social criticism. In so doing, it focuses on realist narratives in several genres, such as fiction, poetry, and non-fiction in order to explore the impact of industrialization and urbanization on the nineteenth-century literary consciousness. Writers studied include, among others, Carlyle, Tennyson, Mill, Dickens, Barrett Browning, Eliot, and Hardy.
