This is a course on the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Specifically, it focuses on how the social, political, economic and cultural contexts in which scientists work affect the type of knowledge that they produce. Topics covered in this course may include various theories of scientific knowledge, the process of knowledge creation and dissemination, the production of certainty and uncertainty, the funding context for science, how social inequalities affect the careers of scientists, the privatization of scientific research and dissemination, scientific innovation, and newer community-based models for science.
