Although scientific and medical knowledge are considered universal, this course investigates how the political, economic, and social contexts of European empires affect what is considered authoritative scientific thought and practice. Drawing conceptually from the historiography of subaltern studies and post-colonial theory, the course shows how ideologies of empire informed both the priorities of scientific investigation as well as their narration. The course focuses specifically on the British Empire in South Asia.
