Community Service Learning

MRU recognizes CSL as a high-impact teaching and learning practice in which students apply academic theories and processes in service to community organizations through structured partnerships. Community partners and professors work together to develop deep academic learning experiences that address real-world challenges. To recognize student achievements in CSL, MRU developed the CSL Citation in 2013 (recorded as a co-curricular record in student transcripts).

The CSL Citation recognizes students’ academic learning and community engagement successes. It is awarded to those who complete three CSL designated courses (a minimum of nine academic credits) throughout their program of study.  CSL designated courses entail at least twenty hours of community service and are worth at least 15% of each course grade. Some courses entail CSL projects worth 100% of the course grade and over 100 hours of project work.

MRU maintains its position as a national leader in Community Service Learning (CSL), with 18 programs across the institution integrating CSL as a core practice in the 2023/2024 academic year. Over 1,300 students participated in CSL courses, contributing nearly 125,000 hours of community service learning and collaborating with almost 500 community partners. These courses, supported by the Academic Development Centre, foster innovative curriculum design and pedagogy, making a significant impact through these diverse partnerships.

CSL courses, partnership development, and faculty support are coordinated through the Academic Development Centre (ADC). Learn more by visiting the StudentsFaculty, and Community Partner pages or contact us through the Contact page.

Three courses for a minimum of nine credits are required for the citation.
