HIST 2251 - Modernity and Nationhood in South Asia Credit(s): 3 Lecture Hour(s): 3 Lecture Hours Schedule Type: Lecture This course offers an introduction to the study of modern South Asia with particular attention to the political, social, and economic forces that have shaped the history of the sub-continent from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. This includes the end of Mughal sovereignty, the rise of East India Company and British Crown rule, and the formation of the independent states of India and Pakistan. Students will explore hierarchies associated with modern India, most significantly those connected to religion, the politics of language, and caste/untouchability. The course will familiarize students with the theoretical concerns of historians of modern societies, specifically with regard to modernity and the nation.
