HIST 3105 - History of Women and Gender in Islamic Societies

This course provides an examination of the historical narratives and discourses pertaining to women and gender in the Islamic world. Central to the course is the analysis of both the enduring aspects and evolving dimensions of women’s status, the construction of gender, and discussions concerning sexuality and the body as they are informed and influenced by the complex interplay of religious, cultural, legal, economic, medical, and political discourses and realities within the Islamic world. Topics might include the lived experiences of women in the context of their political, religious, economic, and socio-legal circumstances.
