IBED 3731 - Special Topics in Indigenous Leadership Credit(s): 3 Lecture Hour(s): 3 Lecture Hours Schedule Type: Lecture This course is developed and delivered by Old Sun Community College, in partnership with MRU, and is tailored to meet the needs of Siksika Nation and individuals reflecting the Siksika Way of Life. There is a vast amount of literature on Western Leadership, however, there are limited books available on Indigenous Leadership and the interest of studying Indigenous Leadership is growing. Western and Indigenous leadership differ. In general, western theories teach becoming a good leader with a focus on individual achievement, concerned with the results and achieving goals rather than relationship. Historically and today, Indigenous leadership focuses on community or collectivism, with an emphasis on the responsibility to take care of the people and the community. This course will prepare students to gain essential knowledge and skills to equip them in working for Indigenous organizations. By understanding Indigenous Leadership, students will be prepared to help lead Indigenous organizations towards making meaningful contributions to support and better Indigenous communities.
